I’ve looked at the pros and cons of both Postgres and MySQL—the conclusion I come to: It depends on your preference.

Both vendors develop powerful databases. Thier speed isn’t all that bad either.

Postgres has a few more advanced features than MySQL, therefore data maintainance is made more efficient. When it comes down to it I prefer Postgres, it’s heavy duty and runs best for large web applications. But of course you can use it for any size application. MySQL is better for smaller applications, it’s easier to pick up.

I would suggest you learn both databases. MySQL is extremely popular, chances are that you’ll use it a few times if not 90% of the time. PostgreSQL is not as popular but it happens to be the world’s most advanced

My advice is: use the database you like the best and that best suits your project.

Data integrity must be maintained both by the server side script your using and the database it’s self.

Why care about your database’s ability to maintain the integrity of data that it stores? Good question. Theres a few reasons why you should look deep into it. First of all if your maintaining data in PostgreSQL you want to make sure that the correct data is being inserted and updated in the correct rows and columns. Second of all, private information as well as user information is at a greater risk of being crapped on by hackers and stupid people.

Here are some methods of insuring the data integrity of your database.

1. ALWAYS use data types! (INT, TEXT, TIMESTAMP etc.)
2. Use SERIAL for your primary keys, the equiv of AUTO_INCREMENT—MySQL
3. Learn to use REFERENCES and Foreign Keys
4. Use constraints

I’ve been trying to come up with some creative ideas for bringing in offline traffic. These are just ideas I’ve come up with as well as borrowed and have yet to be tested.

1. Pin up posters in local areas with little tear-o

2. Give away free items, such as pens, cups, cup holders, shirts, caps etc. with your domain name printed on it.
3. Print out pamphlets and hand them out to people at an event or gathering.
4. Make business cards with your domain name printed on them.
5. Make some stickers of your site and stick them everywhere. Park benches, light poles, traffic signs(at your own risk), ATM machines, in washrooms, on cheap public doors(not peoples houses) where ever you get the chance. Just do it discretely, some people might get annoyed at you slapping stickers on everything.:D
6. Add little notes with your domain name on it and place them on windshields, under the windshield wipers, of parked cars. People will be so relieved that they didn’t get a ticket they might like it.
7. Show your domain name on TV when ever you get the chance.

These are just some random ideas I came up with, feel free to add any ideas if you have some real good ones.

Is it just me or is there more people looking for developers every day. Now days a developer can find almost any kind of job-from setting up a pre-built PHP application to being hired to build one from ground up.

• You can build sites for your self.
• You can share your knowledge in a blog and make money from it.
• Once you know it you can take your knowledge further, sky’s the limit!

These are a few good reasons. However, you have to look at the down side.

• Web Design/Development isn’t for eveyone!
• It takes time and patience, something that you may not be willing to sacrifice.
• It might be a steep learning curve to what your used to.
• Unless you have the drive and the motivation you’ll be fighting an up hill battle.
• Depending on what your learning it may take a bit of pocket cash to get started.

So what do you do if you want to learn web development? Start asking around, know what your getting into, look for tutorials and lessons in books and on the internet, keep learning(no one knows everything) and make sure you have the right tools.

Web development branches out to many other things. E.G. If you learn PHP, chances are your going to learn MySQL. In the end you may end up getting into more than you bargined for. Just learn the basics(PHP, XHtml, Xml, Css, Some Graphics, Database-MySQL).
