Twitter’s all a buzz now days as it reaches massive numbers of user accounts. Something Twitter lacks is a business model for generating income. Does Twitter have a business model ready for implementation? I don’t really know. Up until now, many believe, Twitter is merely a social experiment. The concept of micro-blogging is new to a lot of people. Though there are a few Social Media “experts” that have inside knowledge and understand Twitter’s potential, most people still don’t understand what social media is, or why they should use it. People and businesses, that is.
“Why should I use twitter and social media services for marketing my business?”
Blast from the Past release
Before you jump on the bandwagon, do some research. The first thing you should know and understand is if social media suits your business or not.
Will your clients use social media?
Is it a way to find new customers?
Second of all, don’t expect guaranteed numbers. You cant expect X amount of hits by using so ‘n so method. This is something you are going to have to experiment with. Just signing up with Twitter and auto-tweeting advertisements isn’t going to do it.
Social media is about people and being human.
In my personal experience, you only build a real network when you build relationships. There is of course lots of distance between you and the other people online. You can shorten this distance by attending events or creating your own, however something I haven’t ever tried.
I have to say that most effective ways to build networks using social media(as well as offline for that matter) are these three things:
- Trust.
- Involvement, interaction & constant availability.
- Sharing, giving and contributing to the value of their social media experience.
- Having a brand that you can identify with.
Until you have most of these, especially number 1 & 3 you’re going to have a hard time getting THEM involved i your startups or business.
Experiment, Experiment, Experiment!!
1. The best way to learn how to market on sites like Twitter is to get on Twitter and follow some of the great minds of Social Media, learn a thing or two from them.
2. The second best way is to just go ahead a try it out, make mistakes and try different techniques.
3. Write up a little marketing plan.
This may be way over simplistic but all I do for my marketing on Twitter is use half a page of scrap paper, and write down a few items like so:
- RT 5 interesting tweets.
- Share 4 links.
- Ask 3 Questions
- Answer 2 Questions
- Interact with a few followers.
- Connect 3 people with other people in your network.
- Follow/Meet 3 new people.
…Something like that. make sure you know how much time you spend each day on twitter, since this can be quite time consuming. You need to experiment before you know how much time you need.
Keep adjusting your marketing plan and experimenting until it improves.

A few things you want to avoid:
1. Avoid spamming or what *looks* like spamming.
This may be pretty damn obvious…don’t spam people. Duh! Though I think we all make the mistake at first: things like auto-DMs, Follow Fridaying mega loads of people, or tweeting a massive wad of blog posts or “advertising” to people. Anytime you do something excessively, ask yourself: is this having a positive impact on my network, am I creating value.
2. Avoid being shallow.
Again, back to the advertising part. You’re not here to advertise or wave a bill board in people’s faces. You’re here to build relationships and introduce people to your business or service. Social media is about “being more human” and businesses are using it for just that reason. If you’re a cold hard machine that talks only about your company, tweets links to your site adn never really interacts with people, you’re not about of the community, you’re a broken link.
3. Avoid giving brain aneurysms with your profile design.
I’ve seen some very nice profile designs and backgrounds and I’ve seen some butt-ugly designs that made me wish I had never seen Twitter in the first place
The nicer your design, the more followers you’ll get.
