4 tips to getting more value out of Twitter!
After using Twitter day after day for the past 3-4 months I’ve come up with a few methods of getting something out of telling everyone “what you’re doing”. Lots of these ideas are mixed in with opinions of others. So here are a few of my personal guild lines. And most of these are common-sense but I see a lot of people making the mistakes I bring up in the following points.
1. Update less, reply more!
The more you use Twitter the more apparent it will become that the whole thing isn’t actually about “what you’re doing”. Try not to fall into the misconception that people actually want to know “what you’re doing, all the time.” You might be kind of interesting but seriously, people have better things to do. Unless your going to offer them a bit more than mentioning crap that you’d feel stupid talking about anywhere else, don’t. If you want people following you, make sure you’re interacting with as many people as possible. Something that really turns me off from following someone is this: Very few tweets, Very few or no @replies, very few of both and tons of followers and follows. This tells me that they’re not offering value through their interactions but pulling a few followers by following as many as possible. Bad bad.
2. Don’t automate.
Automation ticks everyone off. Whether it’s a *click my junk* direct message from someone you just followed or a user who has crowded his or her own account with a million of automated “New post here: http://cr.a.p/96″ tweets.
3. Build a relationship with people you follow…
I know! You cant have a intimate relationship on Twitter or find a lover. That’s not really the point. What I mean is, bond with followers and they’ll end up finding you in other social media mediums. By interacting with you follows you’ll end up having lots more followers. I’ve noticed this helps a lot. Don’t expect any acknowledgment until you’ve made a real effort in their part.
4. Loosing a follower or three can be a GOOD thing!
Since Twittergetter, and even before, there’s been a ton of spammers following you and expecting you to return the favor. To avoid this TURN AUTOFOLLOW OFF and learn to identify spammers!!! They usually *unfollow* after they realize you didn’t fall for their crap.
Follow these tips and you’ll notice a few benefits you were missing out on!

@ Update less, reply more!
Absolutley, agree here!
@ Don’t automate: I have my blog feed automated other than that its pretty much manual.
I also fell for the spammer trap, on the first day. But now, I follow people people and not everyone who follows me.
Yeah, some things you need to automate. IMO it’s not a big deal until automation starts taking the place of personal effort where personal effort is necessary.
Thanks for the post! People are crazy for not using more Twitter.
Thanks a lot you to all of the assist
