why I Blog
Writing like reading is very important to our personal development. Both are important skills. Though a person who can write can deeply express himself. A great person once said, “Write to be understood, speak to be heard, read to grow.” All three of these are important. There are two reasons why I write a blog. Number one, it helps me sort out my thoughts. Writing is a funny thing, it’s hard to remember everything you want to say when you’re in a discussion. Writing brings out things from the back of your mind that you may have forgotten about. It’s like playing a tape out of your brain. Number two, a blog is a great vehicle in teaching others and sharing knowledge. I don’t read as many blogs as I used to, I’d rather spend time reading books, they’re much more in-dept and cover a topic much more thoroughly. Carefully chosen blogs are priceless though. From my point of view a blog shouldn’t be about making profit or getting a high ranking on Google. The main reason anyone should have a blog is to teach and inspire others. Other then that I think blogs are a great networking tool and are a great way to kill off your personal home page(which is much more interesting as a blog).
a Shift
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Walt Emerson
Every so often something crosses our path and changes our outlook on life forever. It might be running across a quote, or asking yourself a simple question and seeking answers. It might be the people in your life who you hang out with or the books you read. When we become inspired to act, we have a paradigm shift, it’s like something snaps. When this we have this paradigm shift a whole new world opens in front of our eyes. Our attitude changes and we start noticing opportunities that we might have overlooked in the past.
For me personally this is a change in a few aspects, not an instant tangible change but rather a shift in compass that guides my future. For me a major paradigm shift comes with changing from thinking like a child to thinking like man. It also came in searching for life’s answers, things that were important to me like “What makes people successful,” or “Why are some people, who started from nothing, more successful than others who had all the chances?” Through reading, listening and discussionĀ these questions with other people made me look on success in a new way. One of the most important things that I learned was what Stephan Covey called growing inside-out: creating private victory over yourself before creating a victory outside. I know that there are lots of people that learn this much later in life, and it’s sad … some individualsĀ never decide to change the way they think because such a change makes them feel too uncomfortable. I don’t think any change in thinking is a small change. A change in thinking means and change in everything else in ones life. To me this was very exciting. The deeper I searched the more I understood that success isn’t something for only the talented or lucky people, but for the people who created their own outcomes. The successful are the people that recognize the power of their own choices and, instead of blaming others for their circumstances, act out their own. If you’re among these, you’re apart of the 5% of positive thinkers who have a mindset and potential to be in the 10% who owns 50-70% of wealth in your country. But of course … money is not the ultimate gain. The people who keep their money are the ones who don’t center their lives around it. Money allows us to achieve things we couldn’t when we were poor. But money is not our life and breath. We can’t take for granted the free things in life, which are of course the most precious.
true Entrepreneurs
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Winston Churchill
Much of my posts are about a shift in ones thinking. I think personal development is the building block of entrepreneurship. You cant just pick up techniques of other successful people until you’ve changed inside. One thing I’ve learned about being an entrepreneur is not that it’s about operating a business, or making money but that it’s a process. This process includes growth, a paradigm shift/change in thinking, learning and practicing skills, failing, persisting and a whole lot that I have yet to learn. The problem with many people is that they think they can continue with the traditional way of thinking and use new techniques. This just does not work. If ALL the gears don’t mesh, the clock doesn’t work. People who can understand this mentally, but not emotionally, often give up on their dreams. Other problems are thought poison such as cynicism, stubbornness, victimization(“my life is a mess because of so ‘n so”) and so on. However with the right mindset, anyone can overcome these negative traits if they put their mind to it. I think finding the entrepreneur in people can be a very difficult task, both emotionally and mentally. The reason is, 90% of people have been brought up being thought like and employee, thinking like and employee and working as an employee. To switch from the “E”(Employee) mentality to a “S-B-I”(Self Employed, Business or Investor) mentality takes more than just an intellectual leap, it also means changing emotionally.
“You have greatness … you have the ability to do things you can’t even imagine!” – Les Brown
Les Brown(one of the greatest motivational speakers of all time) told an interesting story about when he was in high school and had been labeled mentally retarded. One day he was waiting on a student and a teacher who wasn’t from his class told him to write something on the board. Les said, “I can’t” the teacher replied “why not?” he said “because I’m not in your class…” the teacher once again said, “write this on the board,” in which he replied “I can’t … ” to which he replied “WHY NOT?” he said “because I’m educably mentally retarded.” That teacher looked at Les and said, “Don’t ever say that. Don’t ever let some one’s opinion of you become your reality!”
If you fail do something with your life, it will be as if you were never born. – Les Brown
Everybody, to some extent, has some form of greatness in them. Everyone has a special talent, that when used, makes them truly great. Great not necessarily meaning wealthy or famous, but great as in reaching one’s full or higher potential. And as illustrated above, much talent and much greatness is thrown away through opinions we hold of our selves and opinions and expectations of others. There are people that will do everything in their power to destroy your dreams and try to “bring you back down to earth.” These small minded, conformity centered people are followers and not leaders, they dis-empower instead of breed greatness in the people around them. Les Brown’s life turned around when someone finally opened a new door for him and show him that other people’s negative opinion of him was bullshit.
One common problem in our everyday life is people’s short sightedness. We’ll look at a person and by his or her appearance, or education, or past and decide whether or not he or she is a looser or a winner. In other words we form an opinion about that person’s future and decide for ourselves whether or not he or she is going to go anywhere in life. Our daily interaction with that person will end up being destructive. I hate to think that we’ve become so shallow as to be able to judge someone’s whole future by their present situation.
To empower individuals around you, you must see people in a different perspective: you must see them for what they COULD be instead of what they ARE. This is a rare perspective, and people who are new to this idea often think that to lead someone you need to lie to them, this is of course crap. Seeing a person for who they currently are is short sightedness, people change daily so your opinion of them may change daily. The art of seeing a person’s future and leading them to their potential is something that only few are willing to do. The reason this is so important is because when we interact with an individual on a regular basis we have the power encourage or discourage. These influences have a huge impact on a person’s overall attitude. We might sometimes think that it’s up to us to “bring a person to the light” and tell him that he’s a big looser and he’ll never get anywhere in live unless of course he listens to your advice. Don’t use this approach, it’ll do more destruction than anything. Measure a person by his dreams, if he doesn’t have any dreams, measure him by what he COULD be and not by what he IS.
Egotism & Self-centeredness
I think we all hit this once in a while. Sometimes titles, names and appearance hijacks us and we find that it becomes a part of our self-security. I read a quote a while ago that, at the time, didn’t make much sense but as time went on I grasped the meaning of it. The quote was by John C. Maxwell, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Bottom line, people don’t give a damn about your titles and your education as much as how you effect their lives. I know a few people who have titles, positions and have accomplished a few things in their life…suddenly they think they’re the coolest person on the block. Ironically they don’t contribute much more to other people than they did before(I don’t mean monetarily), they still live in the same house and they don’t have royalty parking in their driveway too often. People who take themselves too seriously often look to their degrees or titles for security. Greatness is not to be confused with egotism. We aren’t great for what we know or have but what we do and how it effects other people.
The *Secret*
The secret talked about in Think and Grow Rich and often missed by many people who don’t understand the subconscious mind, is the secret used by some of the centuries wealthiest and outstanding people. The secret is no real secret but often overlooked, undervalued and unnoticed. We are only just beginning to understand the subconscious mind and how visualization and neural programming works. It’s not a magic pill, “here’s the secret, wash it down with two cups of water.” Programming your own mind takes time and persistence, and can be difficult for non-visual oriented people.
To sum it up, the secret, if it can be called that, is to think about what you want to become, most of the time, as well as using other techniques of planting goals, images and plans into your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind, which doesn’t discern from good or bad thoughts, will cause you to move in the direction of your goals through intuition and other means that we can’t always fully understand.
The Bible says, “For what a man thinks, that what he is.” Philosophers within the past few thousand years have put emphasis on thought and how it effects who we are. Mastering your mind is one of the steps to success. Planting a desire into your heart and becoming obsessed with what you want to the point where you find a way to get a hold of it.
These techniques have worked for me in both positive and negative ways. Sometimes we’ll dwell on a negative thought, such as failure, until we decide that our failure is inevitable. I’m ever amazed at how this works and have devoted lots of time to understanding and learning more about becoming a master of my own mind. This is an interesting topic and worth reading up on, whether you believe in it or not. Even then, it’s being proved daily by science.
To sum it up, we gravitate towards what are minds attract. Poverty is attracted by poverty stricken thoughts, on the flip side wealth is attracted by thoughts…
Don’t get me wrong, just thinking wont get you anywhere unless you take action. If you don’t have a plan for six months or a year down the road you’ve already set yourself up for failure. Putting off studying until the last minute and just preparing mentally will not get you past the exam. Laying on the couch and thinking yourself skinny wont work either. For any plan to be complete successful there must be real life action taking place. These two go hand in hand. Both aren’t absolutes by any stretch.
