A large amount of content or database driven sites neglect to optimize their URIs for search engines. Even well known sites that have been around for years. Adding a few keywords to the URI/URL is common SEO knowledge. However, lots of developers only do this in blogs and fail to do it in other applications.

Referencing the a server side resource by adding it’s id to the URI(e.g. ?user_id=4347) is a safe and simple method. The only problem is that you don’t get the full benefit of search engines. The search engine will look at your URI and just see it as a bunch of gibberish. A number(id=873) means absolutely nothing the crawler and will be ignored.

Instead of a URI like this(Dirty URI)

I would put some SE readable keywords in there(Nice URI):

Overall it’s just better looking and it gives the search engine a reason to rank you higher!

• Web Design/Development isn’t for eveyone!
• It takes time and patience, something that you may not be willing to sacrifice.
• It might be a steep learning curve to what your used to.

• Depending on what your learning it may take a bit of pocket cash to get started.

So what do you do if you want to learn web development? Start asking around, know what your getting into, look for tutorials and lessons in books and on the internet, keep learning(no one knows everything) and make sure you have the right tools.

Web development branches out to many other things. E.G. If you learn PHP, chances are your going to learn MySQL. In the end you may end up getting into more than you bargined for. Just learn the basics(PHP, XHtml, Xml, Css, Some Graphics, Database-MySQL).
